The ice here in Kentucky finally melted, and that’s made it easier to get back to work. No more slipping around in my backyard, no more leaving the faucets on drip, or worrying about power outages. The dogs are calmer now too. Longer walks, less cabin fever, fewer dramatic sighs while I stare at the screen. A tired dog is a good dog.

As you consider different platforms for your blog, it’s natural to wonder how long they’ll be around and if the developers are invested or just throwing darts at the board. After all, most startups fold within 2 to 5 years.

As someone who is obsessed with software, I know firsthand how frustrating it is to pour your heart into a platform that ends up getting canned. Over the years, I’ve come up with a few simple signals that reveal whether an app is built to last.

What to watch out for

When trying to decide if devs are serious about an app, I look at several signals that leak intent:

Those who know me know I can be a bit of a control freak—on and off screen. For years I had dozens of folders and iCloud rules keeping my inbox perfectly sorted and squeaky clean.

Sometime in the past year, Apple Mail added automatic categories. I completely missed it and kept dragging and sorting messages like it’s still 2009.

One that stays out of the way, and lets me publish what’s on my mind, naturally, and connect with others around shared interests.
